Attorney General’s Office Donates $1500 to Central Virginia Foodbank
Attorney General McDonnell Presents Check for “HolidayTurkeys” Program
RICHMOND - Attorney General Bob McDonnell visited the Central Virginia Foodbank in Richmond today to present a check for $1500 from the staff of the Office of the Attorney General. The donation is for the Central Virginia Foodbank’s “Holiday Turkeys” fundraising drive. The “Holiday Turkeys” program is an annual event for the Food Bank in which every $10 donation equals a turkey for a family in Central Virginia during the holiday season.
Speaking about the donation Attorney General McDonnell noted, “I want to thank the staff of The Office of the Attorney General for their generosity in this effort. I am honored to work alongside such a tremendous group of dedicated and giving individuals. I salute the Central Virginia Food Bank for the great work it does in the Central Virginia area. Because of leaders like Foodbank CEO Fay Lohr and all those who work and volunteer at the Central Virginia Foodbank, thousands of residents of this area will get to enjoy a real turkey dinner this holiday season. I urge those who live in Central Virginia to support this program, and I hope Virginians in other areas will contact their local Food Banks to find out how they can get involved in combating hunger in the Commonwealth.”
Fay Lohr, CEO of the Central Virginia Foodbank, remarked, “On behalf of many who will share thanks and a meal tomorrow, we are grateful for the generosity of Attorney General McDonnell and his staff. All of us at the Central Virginia Foodbank, along with over 500 feeding partners, thank the employees of the Office of the Attorney General for their efforts to bring a Thanksgiving bounty to thousands of Central Virginians."
The “Holiday Turkey” program is ongoing throughout the holiday season. Last year the Central Virginia Foodbank needed 5,000 turkeys, 2500 turkey breasts and 200 oven roasters to meet the need in the area. When the Food Bank went to preorder for this year they were able to meet just 35% of that number.
The Central Virginia Foodbank serves an area stretching from MecklenburgCounty on the North Carolina border, all the way to WestmorelandCounty on the Northern Neck. This includes the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan region. The amount of food distributed by the Food Bank this year has increased by 14% from last year, to 12.9 million pounds. Half of the individuals served by the Central Virginia Food Bank are children.
