Statement of Attorney General Bob McDonnell Regarding Richmond Mayor L. Douglas Wilder’s Decision Not to Seek Re-election
Richmond -- Attorney General Bob McDonnell released the following statement today regarding former Virginia Governor, and current Richmond Mayor, L. Douglas Wilder’s decision not to seek re-election:
“I have enjoyed working with Doug Wilder in two capacities. I first served with him when I was a freshman delegate during his historic term as Governor of Virginia. Most recently, I have served as attorney general during his landmark term as Mayor of Richmond. I have found him to be a tireless, effective and strong leader always concerned with efficient government, and the concerns of taxpayers.
“Our offices have formed a close relationship when it comes to public safety in Richmond. Through the groundbreaking G.R.I.P. program we have worked together to provide new opportunities to citizens in at-risk Richmond neighborhoods. We have also remained committed to ensuring that those who commit crimes are taken off the streets. Richmond is a safer city today because of Mayor Wilder. This is to the benefit of the entire Commonwealth. I am pleased that our office has been able to be of assistance in this effort.
“Throughout his career, Doug Wilder has been a strong and innovative leader, and a dedicated public servant. His legacy is much larger than the individual achievements and actions that comprise his nearly 40 years of public service. His legacy is that of a statesman, who broke through old barriers, eschewed tired labels and constantly sought new and better ways of governing. As a veteran, state senator, governor and mayor, L. Douglas Wilder has earned a secure place in the long list of great Virginians. I wish him the very best.”
