Attorney General McDonnell Announces $50,000 Grant for Senior Protection

Localities Eligible for Funds to Prevent Frauds and Scams

RICHMONDAttorney General Bob McDonnell today announced $50,000 in grant funding to help Virginia localities educate senior citizens on crime prevention and consumer protection. The money will be awarded to partnerships of local law enforcement and senior service organizations called TRIAD, run through the Attorney General’s Office. The funding will come from the Office’s Regulatory, Consumer Advocacy, Litigation and Enforcement Revolving Trust Fund, which was established by the 1994 General Assembly and consists primarily of money resulting from consumer protection and anti-trust litigation.

TRIAD partnerships can apply for portions of the fund (up to $2,750 each) by submitting proposals to use the money to educate seniors on consumer protection and crime prevention. Grant applications are available online to active Triad partnerships and submissions will be due by May 11. Entries will be reviewed by a grant panel in the Office of the Attorney General and also by the Virginia State S.A.L.T. (Seniors And Law enforcement Together) Council.

Proposals should be submitted to Jennifer Aulgur. She can be reached at (804) 786-9516 or by emailing jaulgur@oag.state.va.us.

Virginia TRIAD was established by the Office of the Attorney General in 1995 to develop and implement policies and programs to reduce criminal victimization of senior citizens, serve the special needs of older victims, and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to the elderly. Among those joining then Attorney General Jim Gilmore in signing the original joint agreement were the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, the Virginia State Police and the Virginia Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. Today, 216 cities, counties, and towns in the Commonwealth have signed TRIAD cooperative agreements.
