Statement of Attorney General Bob McDonnell on Inauguration of President Barack Obama

RICHMOND - Attorney General Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today regarding the inauguration of President Barack Obama:

“At noon today we, and the world, once again witnessed the greatness of America. In a peaceful ceremony reflecting the will of the voters, Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th President. The genius of our founders and our political system is no where more on display than in the election and inauguration of the President.

“Today also marks another milestone in American democracy. A nation that long struggled with the evil of slavery witnessed today an African-American ascending to our highest office. On the steps of a Capitol building that was constructed in part by slave labor, we saw America taking the kind of monumental step that would be impossible in many other nations. The American beacon of liberty, freedom, justice and equality shines brightly at this moment.

“I wish President Obama the very best as he guides the greatest country on earth. We disagree on some key issues. However, on the fundamental principles of maintaining a strong America, creating new jobs, advancing justice and prosperity, and reducing excessive partisanship, we are united as Americans. We face many challenges ahead. But together, the American people will ensure that this nation remains the shining city on a hill that continues to inspire and lead the world.”
