Official Opinions*

The official opinions of Attorney General McDonnell will be posted as they are issued, generally within 24 to 48 hours.  Please check this page at regular intervals to determine whether additional opinions have been issued.

 

Search Opinions 1996 to Date

Opinions prior to 1996 may be accessed via online searchable databases, including CaseFinder, LexisNexis, and Westlaw (subscriptions required).  Some public libraries provide access to LexisNexis or Westlaw for a nominal fee.  Law school libraries generally have copies of the annual report as do county constitutional officers, e.g., circuit court clerks and commissioners of the revenue.  The Library of Virginia also maintains copies of the annual reports.

*Section 2.2-505 of the Code of Virginia authorizes the Attorney General of Virginia to render official opinions to the Governor, members of the General Assembly, judges, the State Corporation Commission, state agency heads, and certain local officials. The Honorable Robert F. McDonnell was elected Attorney General by the citizens of Virginia and sworn into office on January 14, 2006, for a term of 4 years. The Honorable Judith W. Jagdmann was elected Attorney General by the General Assembly on January 27, 2005, and was sworn into office on February 1, 2005, to fill the unexpired term of the Honorable Jerry W. Kilgore and served until January 14, 2006. The Honorable Jerry W. Kilgore was sworn into office on January 12, 2002, and served until his resignation on February 1, 2005. The Honorable Randolph A. Beales was elected Attorney General by the General Assembly on July 10, 2001, and was sworn into office on July 11, 2001, to fill the unexpired term of the Honorable Mark L. Earley and served until January 12, 2002. The Honorable Mark L. Earley was sworn in as Attorney General on January 17, 1998, and served until his resignation on June 4, 2001. The Honorable Richard Cullen was appointed Attorney General to fill the unexpired term of the Honorable James S. Gilmore III and served until January 17, 1998. The Honorable James S. Gilmore, III, served as Attorney General during 1996 until his resignation on June 11, 1997.
