Meth Watch: Program Basics
- This is a program designed to deter local production and facilitate communication between retailers and law enforcement. The program will increase public awareness of the methamphetamine situation and will facilitate law enforcement interaction with local merchants.
- The program consists of employee training, standardized forms for reporting suspicious transactions, and the implementation of common sense retail approaches to hamper the effortless acquisition of precursor agents/ingredients for the production of methamphetamines.
- This is a strictly voluntary program that recognizes the constraints on retailers and presents them with the option to participate in various degrees to effectively address a serious threat in our communities. An additional benefit of this approach is that it will allow multi-state retailers to utilize standardized training in their stores.
- The program will be implemented with no significant monetary costs to merchants and with a limited investment by the Commonwealth. This approach involves the coordination of federal and state level resources along with cooperation from trade associations, retail merchants and other companies to form a program that addresses the unique needs of Virginia.
- It is a three-tiered program, with each tier building upon the previous level, allowing merchants flexibility in implementing the program.
